SYEP Youth Worker Request Form

The Virginia Beach Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is a positive youth development program that partners with local businesses, agencies and organizations to provide Virginia Beach youth and young adults ages 16-21 with paid worker experience for 8 weeks of the summer (June 20th – August 12th). Prior to starting their job, SYEP Participants are provided up to 20 hours of job skill, workplace readiness and financial empowerment training facilitated by Job Coaches and professionals. Throughout the 8-week program, SYEP Participants will gain new experiences, new perspectives and develop future career goals.

The deadline to complete the SYEP Youth Worker Request Form is Monday, March 7th.

 

Employer Roles & Responsibilities

  • Provide productive assignments for youth to develop real-world work experience.
  • Define duties, communicate the nature and scope of responsibility, explain expectations, and provide adequate training and supervision.
  • Offer youth a minimum of 27 hours and a maximum of 35 hours per week for 7 weeks (June 27th – August 12th). Hours can be extended beyond 35 hours per week per request of the placement site, pending funding.
  • Provide a site supervisor who will serve as a positive mentor for the SYEP Participant
  • Communicate periodically with the student's Job Coach.
  • Offer feedback to the student on a regular basis.
  • Complete bi-weekly and final evaluations of SYEP Participant as well as verify and approve timesheets through VB Time.
  • Schedule and participate in 2-3 site visits including the SYEP Job Coach and SYEP Participant.
  • (CITY ONLY) Verify and approve weekly timesheets though VB Time

Virginia Beach Summer Youth Employment Program Roles & Responsibilities

  • (CITY ONLY) Provide SYEP Participants with salaries up to 35 hours per week, liability insurance coverage, workers-compensation coverage.
  • Coordinate recruitment, eligibility, and placement process to include background checks for SYEP Participants 18 & up.
  • Provide up to 20 hours of workplace readiness training to SYEP Participants.
  • Provide continued on-site support to supervisors and SYEP Participants through frequent site visits from program Job Coaches.

Is a driver’s license require to complete the job duties of this position? (Note: All city employees including SYEP Participants are required by Risk Management to complete the city Defensive Driving course in the position includes driving duties.)

Is this position available to participants who are required to attend summer school and are unavailable to work Monday-Thursday 8am – 1pm.

Is there a remote work option for this position?

Would you be able to provide the SYEP Participant(s) with at least 27 hours of work each week?

All SYEP Participants are consider part-time city staff and will receive a city badge. SYEP Staff will take care of getting all badges for SYEP Participants, BUT we will not assign specific privileges. Choose the best response to let us know the type of badge to provide your SYEP Participant.

Starting in March, SYEP will begin conducting in-person interviews with over 100 candidates. Are you, or someone from your Department/unit interested in assisting with SYEP interviews?
